APN EVENING SEMINAR

“Reparenting the “vulnerable child” in adults –
Schema Therapy in action”

Dr Xi Liu
Clinical Psychologist, Accredited Advanced Schema Therapist

About the 2019 seminars: The Anxiety Practitioners Network is pleased to bring you the 2019 series of Clinical Focus Seminars aimed at providing clinicians and clinical students with up to date information relating to different fields of anxiety treatment. These seminars will be run by clinicians and clinical researchers who are experts in their respective fields.

About this seminar: Schema Therapy has become an increasingly popular therapy for hard-to-treat Axis II disorders. It has evolved in the last two decades to demonstrate efficacy with Borderline Personality Disorder (Farrell et al, 2009; Dickhault & Arntz; 2014), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Arntz et al, 2013), Cluster C personality disorders (Lunding & Hoffart; 2014) and Eating Disorders (Simpson, et al, 2010). Clinical evidence has also pointed to effective treatment for Narcissistic Personality Disorders and Couples Therapy. The founder of Schema Therapy, Dr Jeffrey Young and many others in the research and clinical community have developed a compassionate and evidence based treatment that integrates Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Attachment theory, Object Relations Theories, Psychodrama and Gestalt theory. A crucial component of this modality is the role of unmet core emotional needs in childhood and adolescence that result in the development of schemas and modes. This seminar will give a taste of Schema Therapy in action – particularly how the therapist can connect to the “vulnerable child” mode in clients by meeting core emotional needs in a session. In addition to a brief introduction to Schema Therapy, the group will be guided through an experiential exercise and a brief client case discussion.

About the presenter: Dr Xi Liu is an Advanced certified Schema Therapist and supervisor. She completed her training at the New York Institute for Schema Therapy with founder Dr Jeffrey Young and narcissism expert Wendy Behary.

Xi have a special interest in Online Therapy and have presented symposiums at the International Society for Schema Therapy Conference in Amsterdam and Rome on adapting Schema Therapy for Online Treatment. In addition, she also works extensively with LGBTQ clients, Medicine Sans Frontier (MSF) field staff and culturally and linguistically diverse clients.

Xi started her Clinical Psychology career in Job Network services, providing therapy interventions for long term job seekers in Western Sydney. She has since worked for private hospitals, Not for Profit Organisations and in private practice. She currently runs a small private practice in Newtown and also operates out of Rozelle.
