‘From Prohibition to Prescription: The Role of Cannabinoids in Sleep and Anxiety’

| About this seminar: Sleep is a fundamental physiological process often described as a ‘vital sign’ or a signal of one’s general physical and mental health. It holds a bi-directional relationship with anxiety (and other mental health conditions) such that sleep difficulties may be both a cause and consequence of anxiety. While behavioural interventions such as CBT are the mainstay of treatment, people often seek short-term strategies to maintain normal daytime function. These often include prescription sleep aids and/or alternative treatments such as medicinal cannabis. |
| Anxiety and sleep disorders are the second and third most common indications for a prescription for medicinal cannabis in Australia. But are cannabinoids an effective treatment for sleep and anxiety? In this seminar, Anastasia will share the science behind cannabinoids and an overview of recent research, as well as use case presentations to highlight how different cannabinoids are being used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. Anastasia will also share new data on medicinal cannabis prescribing trends for psychiatry-related conditions in Australia. |
| About the presenter: About the presenter: Dr Anastasia Suraev is a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney where her research focuses on the clinical applications of cannabinoid-based therapies, with a focus on sleep disorders. Anastasia completed her Master of Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Melbourne in 2015 before embarking on her PhD at the University of Sydney in 2018. Her PhD thesis examined the effects of cannabinoids on sleep and daytime function in insomnia disorder. Anastasia is passionate about science communication and has appeared in several major news outlets such as The New York Times. She has also spoken on the therapeutic and regulatory aspects of medicinal cannabis at various academic and industry events across Australia and internationally. |
