Caution – burnout ahead? Emotional labour and burnout in the provision of mental health care

About the 2024 webinars: The Anxiety Practitioners Network is pleased to bring you the 2024 series of Clinical Focus Webinars aimed at providing clinicians and clinical students with up-to-date information relating to different fields of anxiety and related disorders. These webinars will be run by clinicians and clinical researchers who are experts in their respective fields. 

About this webinar: As service workers, mental health clinicians may be required to engage in emotional labour to ensure the emotions they express at work are appropriate. This may involve amplifying certain emotions and/or shielding other emotions from public view. However, understanding how psychologists engage in emotional labour (and what effects this might contribute to) is a relatively new area of research. 

This webinar provides a broad overview of emotional labour, answering questions including: What is emotional labour and how does it manifest in psychotherapy? How might it relate to clinician burnout and wellbeing? Can clinicians manage their emotions sustainably? This webinar will also provide some general information on identifying and managing early signs of burnout, and in doing so, aims to equip you with practical knowledge you can use throughout your career span. This will be an interactive webinar that involves learning, reflection, and sharing (if comfortable).

About the presenter: Anthony is a clinical psychology registrar and postdoctoral research fellow at the Black Dog Institute. His PhD research examined a) how psychologists experience emotional labour when providing psychotherapy, b) how emotional labour relates to various aspects of wellbeing, and c) the impact of emotional labour on the therapeutic relationship. His clinical work centres on the prevention and treatment of burnout among medical and allied health professionals.
