APN EVENING CASE PRESENTATION

‘Getting to know Females on the Autism Spectrum’

Dr Ramona Toscano Callus
Clinical Psychologist
Diverse Minds Psychology Clinic

About the 2019 case presentations: The Anxiety Practitioners Network is pleased to bring you the 2019 series of Case Presentations aimed at providing a more relaxed atmosphere for discussing anxiety treatments. These presentations provide an opportunity to see some of the most experienced clinicians present one or more detailed cases highlighting issues in their area of expertise.

About this topic: This case presentation will focus on how autism is experienced by autistic girls and women. Current research, clinical practice and anecdotal reports indicate that autistic females demonstrate less traditionally obvious traits of autism, which are often not recognised, diagnosed much later than others or misdiagnosed. This presentation aims to provide practitioners with a better understanding of how autism presents in females and information about ways to support autistic females. The lived experience of autistic females, including their challenges with stress, anxiety, depression and sensory difficulties will be illustrated through the use of case- presentations.

About the presenter: Dr Ramona Toscano Callus is a clinical psychologist from Diverse Minds Psychology Clinic, a private practice in Erskineville. Ramona completed a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) at the University of Malta and a Doctor of Clinical Psychology at Macquarie University in Sydney. Ramona’s doctoral research focused on the assessment of anxiety in children and adolescents with anxiety disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Ramona works with individuals across the lifespan who present with a range of difficulties including neurodevelopmental conditions such as ASD and ADHD, anxiety and depression. She has a keen interest in supporting females with autism spectrum conditions and their families. Ramona has presented across Australia and internationally, with a focus on early intervention, assessment and treatment of challenges that often occur in the context of autism spectrum conditions.
