SUMMARY:Clinical Focus Webinar: Functional Neurological Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Functional Neurological Disorder: Practical Assessment\, Formulation and Treatment for Psychologists and MDT Clinicians \nPresenters: Dr Daniella Siciliano & Elizabeth Pearson\, Let’s Talk FND\nFunctional Neurological Disorder (FND) is increasingly recognised across psychological\,\nmedical and alliedhealth settings\, yet many clinicians continue to feel unsure about how to\nassess it\, explain it\, and integrate psychological and rehabilitation approaches without\nreinforcing fear or inadvertently invalidating lived experience.\nFor psychologists who work extensively with anxiety\, FND presents a unique clinical\nintersection:\n• Anxiety can cooccur with FND\,\n• Anxiety can amplify or maintain FND symptoms\,\n• And FND can exist independently\, even in the absence of diagnosable anxiety\ndisorders.• Recognise common presentations and the factors that maintain symptoms\n• Differentiate FND from primary anxiety disorders while understanding how the two\nconditions interact and overlap\n• Apply practical psychological assessment and formulation principles to guide\nevidenceinformed treatment planning\n• Identify core psychological and rehabilitation treatment approaches for FND\n• Communicate effectively across the multidisciplinary team to support consistent\nmessaging and unified recovery pathways \nUnderstanding these distinctions is essential for accurate formulation\, effective\ncommunication\, and coordinated multidisciplinary care.\nCommon questions clinicians raise include:\n• How do I explain FND in a way that is clear\, compassionate and nonthreatening?\n• How do I validate symptoms without reinforcing avoidance or fear responses?\n• What is psychology’s role\, and how does it complement physiotherapy and medical\nrehabilitation?\n• How do we align across the MDT to deliver consistent\, recovery-focused messaging?\nThis practical threehour webinar is designed for psychologists and multidisciplinary clinicians\nworking with individuals experiencing FND\, anxiety disorders\, persistent physical symptoms\,\ntrauma histories\, chronic pain\, fatigue\, dissociation\, and other complex mind–body\npresentations. \nDr Daniella Siciliano and Elizabeth Pearson will bring together clinical psychology and\nphysiotherapy perspectives to explore how FND can be understood and treated using a\ncompassionate\, evidence-informed and recovery-focused framework. \nAbout the presenters \nDr Daniella Siciliano is a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with\nanxiety\, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)\, chronic pain and complex mind–body\npresentations.
