SUMMARY:Clinical Focus Seminar - Treating Anxiety and Depression using the Internet
DESCRIPTION:Title: Treating Anxiety and Depression using the Internet \nPresenter: Associate Professor Nick Titov \nAbout this seminar: There has been a rapid increase in the use of the internet to provide treatments for health conditions. This trend reflects the increasing availability of the internet as well as awareness of its potential by consumers\, service providers\, and politicians\, for improving access to treatments. This session will provide an overview of issues in the online treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders\, focusing on developments in the last 5 years. It will initially address the recent evidence base\, followed by examples of how internet treatment courses can be administered and a summary of the advantages and disadvantages for both clinicians and consumers. It will then discuss some of the many controversies\, opportunities\, and challenges presented by this emerging field. Finally\, these developments will also be discussed in the context of the proposed introduction of the Federal Government-funded online portal for treatments for anxiety and depressive disorders. \nAbout the presenter: Nick Titov is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Emotional Health\, Department of Psychology\, Macquarie University. He is also Director of the eCentreClinic\, a research program that develops and evaluates remote treatment courses for common mental disorders. His team has treated 2000 adults in more than 30 clinical trials of internet treatments for conditions that include major depressive disorder\, generalised anxiety disorder\, social phobia\, panic disorder\, obsessive compulsive disorder\, and posttraumatic stress disorder. \n
